Online car valuation: How we assess your vehicle

Why an algorithm cannot know the value of your car. And how our valuation actually works.

4 min read

You have probably searched for "online car valuation" before. And you came across Schwacke, DAT, AutoScout24 or one of the other tools. You enter make, model, year and mileage, and you get a number. The question is: Is it accurate?

Short answer: Usually not. Not because the tools are bad, but because they are fundamentally limited. And I am not saying this just so you use our form instead (although of course I want that too). I am saying it because it is the truth.

The problem with automatic valuation tools

Schwacke and DAT work with statistical averages from the German market. That is their data basis. The tools know the average value trend of a given model based on millions of data points. For Germany.

The first problem: Luxembourg is not Germany. Prices here often differ by 10 to 15 percent, in both directions. SUVs are more popular in Luxembourg than in Munich. Diesel is valued more positively here because fuel is cheaper. And certain features (like a tow bar or all-wheel drive) are valued higher in the Luxembourg market than in Germany.

The second problem: The tools do not know your car. They know average values for the model, but not the actual condition of your vehicle. A VW Golf with R-Line and a base VW Golf are different data points for Schwacke, yes. But whether your R-Line Golf has a dent in the door, brand-new leather seats or 3 previous owners, no algorithm knows that.

AutoScout24 takes a different approach and looks at current listings. That sounds better, but it has another problem: listing prices are not selling prices. The price in the ad is the seller's asking price. The actual selling price is almost always lower. AutoScout24 sees the listing price, not the deal price.

What are HSN and TSN and why are they not enough?

When you do a Schwacke or DAT valuation, you are asked for the HSN (manufacturer key number) and TSN (type key number). This is a German system. These numbers identify your vehicle precisely by model and engine type.

But watch out: If your car is registered in Luxembourg, you will not find HSN/TSN on the Carte Grise. Luxembourg uses different vehicle codes. Identification here works via the chassis number (VIN) and the national type codes on the Carte Grise. In France it is similar: The Carte Grise contains its own type designations (CNIT), not German HSN/TSN numbers. Only if your car is registered in Germany will you find HSN and TSN directly in the vehicle registration document (fields 2.1 and 2.2).

And even if you have the right numbers: HSN and TSN say nothing about individual condition. Two cars with identical HSN/TSN can be 5,000 euros apart. One has a full service history, one owner, garage-kept. The other has three previous owners, gaps in the service book and a repaired hail damage. Same number, completely different value.

How our valuation works

At mirkaafenaerenauto.lu we have developed a three-step process that combines automatic data with real expert knowledge. Sounds fancy, but it is basically common sense.

Step 1: Your details

You fill out our form. Make, model, year, mileage, equipment, condition. It takes 2 minutes. Photos are welcome but not required. The more you provide, the more accurate our valuation will be. But even with basic details we can give you an initial estimate.

Step 2: Market analysis

Our experts check your details against current market data. Not just Schwacke or DAT, but real transaction data from Luxembourg, Germany, France and the entire Greater Region. What was paid last week for a comparable vehicle? What is the current demand? Are there seasonal effects? We have known the market for over 28 years and have purchased more than 40,000 vehicles in that time, from all three countries. No algorithm can replace that experience.

Step 3: Personal offer

Within 24 hours we contact you with a concrete offer. Not "between X and Y", but a specific number. If you agree, you come to our branch in Roost or Bertrange for a vehicle inspection. There we confirm the price (or adjust it if the condition differs from what was described, which can go in either direction). Signature, money in your account, done.

Why we do not offer an instant online valuation

Many competitors show you a number on screen right away. Looks professional. But that number is based on the same limited algorithms as Schwacke and others. We prefer to take a few hours and give you a value you can rely on. An honest valuation needs a person who knows what they are doing.

When is which tool worth it?

Schwacke and DAT are good for a rough orientation. If you want to know whether your car is worth closer to 10,000 or 20,000 euros, these tools help. For a negotiation basis in a private sale they are also useful. But as a basis for a selling decision? Too imprecise.

AutoScout24 valuations are good for seeing what other sellers are asking for comparable cars. But remember: Those are asking prices, not selling prices. Subtract 10 to 15 percent and you get closer to reality.

Our valuation is the right choice if you actually want to sell your car and need a binding price. Free, no obligation, and tailored to the market in Luxembourg, Germany and France. We value all brands, from VW to BMW to Tesla.

What you need for the valuation

Not much really: Make, model, year, mileage. That is enough for an initial estimate. If you want a more precise valuation, additional details help: engine type, transmission, trim level, special equipment, number of previous owners, condition description. And photos. A good photo says more than a thousand words. Especially with used cars. Whether your car is registered in Luxembourg, Germany or France, we will value it. At mirkaafenaerenauto.lu we take care of all the paperwork, no matter where your vehicle is registered.
